What makes our filmmaking programs and workshops unique?
The New York Film Academy is a film school designed for a new generation of filmmakers who want to learn by making their own projects in a hands-on, intensive program. Traditional film schools often delay the moment when students get their hands-on the cameras and actually make movies. At the Academy you will learn by doing from day one. Whether you enroll in a four-week filmmaking workshop or our one-year film-directing program you will write, shoot, direct, and edit your own short films. Your teachers will demystify the craft of film production and challenge you to master the art of visual storytelling.

Learning to be a filmmaker is not done "by the numbers." It is done by immersion in the process and by knowing the "whys" that teach the "hows." It is done by hands-on experience, trial and error, feedback and correction, and questions and answers. In the creation of our film school and curriculum, we worked with students and faculty from around the world. We adapted the best ideas and elements from the top university film schools and designed an alternative which provides a thorough grounding in filmmaking, and is also flexible in meeting the diverse needs of our students.

We teach the art and craft of filmmaking through a balance of classroom instruction, hands-on film workshops, and immediate directing experience. Students are behind the camera from the first day of class. Students will learn about and explore the numerous visual, dramatic, and technical challenges that directors face. What makes our One-Year Producing Program unique?

The New York Film Academy's Film and Television Producing Program is housed within our film school and is designed to illuminate one of the most important and misunderstood jobs in film and television. Students eager to control their own destiny in the business world of film and television will flourish in this intensive hands-on program. It is geared to students with little or no experience in producing, but who recognize that an intensive and demanding program, much like the job of producing itself, will provide them with the knowledge they seek.

Students are treated as producers throughout the duration of the course, and are challenged at each step of the way. Students are encouraged, but not required; to bring a piece of intellectual property — a book, screenplay, show concept or treatment — at the beginning of the course. Throughout the year students will take this project through the various stages of development — pitch, treatment, script, talent search, budget, schedule, and plans for marketing and distribution. Students will learn the real-word strategies for successful producing and have opportunities to make the actual contacts needed within the film and television industry. Students must be prepared for full-days of intensive work five to six days a week, throughout the entire year. They must be committed to a fast-paced, intensive learning and production schedule, and willing to work collaboratively with our Film School and Acting School students. The program is offered at our film schools in New York and Los Angeles.

WHAT MAKES OUR DIGITAL FILM SCHOOL UNIQUE?
Digital Video is a fantastic new medium that is ever changing and developing. The Academy likes to stay on top of the new technology making every attempt to introduce students to the most sought after digital cinematic tools. As in our 16mm filmmaking Workshops, our school does not delay the moment when students get their hands-on the cameras and actually make movies. At the Academy, you will learn by doing from day one. Whether you enroll in the Four-week Digital Film Making Workshop or the Twelve-week Evening Digital Filmmaking Workshop you will write, shoot, direct, and edit your own short films. In the One-week Music Video Workshop, you will take part in a real music video shoot and have the opportunity to edit your own version to take home with you. Your teachers will demystify the craft of digital filmmaking production and challenge you to use the medium to its best advantage.

In addition to writing, producing, directing, and editing their own projects, students assist other members of their crews in the roles of director of photography, assistant cameraperson, and gaffer/grip, providing everyone with extensive set experience.

Our digital film school student body is made up of an incredibly diverse, international group of students who are excited by the prospects and possibilities of this great new technology and the art of storytelling and documentary filmmaking. The combination of non-stop collaborative work, diverse cultures and experiences, and a shared passion for film make our digital filmmaking workshops intensely enriching experiences. Students forge bonds, both professional and personal, that often extend beyond the school. Students often say that the Academy's workshop or program was the most exciting, difficult, and rewarding creative experience they have ever had.

OVERVIEW

In the film industry, screenwriters are now recognized as being just as important as directors in making films. The cliche still holds true, you can make a bad movie with a good screenplay, but you can't make a good movie with a bad screenplay.

Successful screenwriting, however, requires discipline, perseverance and training. One of the most difficult aspects of screenwriting is simply getting started. After years of stopping and starting, many writers find that dedicating themselves to an intensive program of study at a top-notch film school, surrounded by other new writers, screenwriting can take on life of its own and become second nature.

The Screenwriting Workshops and Programs of the New York Film Academy are the most comprehensive screenwriting courses of all top     film schools. Students can develop an idea into a feature length screenplay in as little as eight weeks, or hone their skills in our One-Year Screenwriting Program, and walk away with a body of work to begin their professional screenwriting journey.
