LEGAL ENGLISH PROGRAMME
Who should take this course?
Students and professionals with a low-advanced or better level of English who are interested in improving their English language proficiency while receiving an introduction to or review of the US legal system.
Participants generally include law students and practicing attorneys as well as reporters, or business professionals.
This course is open to Core 108 and higher level students. However, students must have 4-6 months of previous legal studies or law-related work experience to be admitted into this program.
What this course includes:
This twenty-five-hour-per-week program features the following two courses for Legal English students only. These classes are taught by highly skilled and experienced English instructors with a Master’s in Linguistics or TESL. The instructor, who has a keen interest in law, will also coordinate field trips and expert guest lecturers.
Legal English Core- 6 hours per week:
an introduction to or a review of U.S. legal systems
trial procedures
landmark cases
social/cultural trends that affect the law
guest lectures by legal scholars and practicing attorneys
readings, vocabulary study, discussions
participant presentations
class excursions to the courthouse and other sites
Legal Vocabulary- 3 hours per week:
extensive practice and application of the vocabulary learned in the Legal English Core
additional law-related words and terminology
The remaining 16 hours of the program will allow participants to target specific language skills and/or content areas as needed or desired:
